Song to Mahalta, I

Our souls are flowing like two parallel rivers.

They run the same course under the same skies.

We are unable to bring our placid lives together:

a land of cypresses and palms keeps us apart.

In the meanders, yellow lilies, peaceful green,

I feel as if your gentle heartbeat were following me

and I hear your waters, tremulous and caring,

from source to sea —our ancient homeland.
