Translating Catalan Literature into English

In spite of the undoubted importance of Catalan literature from its early beginnings to the 16th century, and then again from the mid-19th century to our day, very few works have been translated into or are even known in English. Sir Thomas Grenville (1755-1846), who had in his library editions of Tirant lo Blanc (1490) and Lo Carcer damor (1493), was clearly an isolated case of such knowledge, and few readers today realize that the first modern Catalan translation of the New Testament (1832) was undertaken in London and printed by the British and Foreign Bible Society.

The evolution and varying fortunes of Catalan
Catalan is one of the Romance languages, like French, Italian, Spanish, Romanian and Portuguese, that come from Latin. Originating in the south of France and the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, its position on either side of the Pyrenees and bordering the Mediterranean shaped its character, making it a bridge between Iberian and Gallic Romance. It is spoken in an area that stretches from the French department of Pyrénées-Orientales in the north to Alacant (Alicante) in the south, from Lleida (Lérida) and Andorra in the west to the Balearic Islands and Alghero in Sardinia in the east. Including the varieties spoken in Valencia and Majorca, over 9 million people speak Catalan today − more than speak Danish, Finnish or Norwegian − making it unique among Europe’s non-national languages.

Parlant de la traducció entre cultures, Naoki Sakai va afirmar quelcom que val la pena tenir sempre present: contràriament al que es pugui pensar, la traducció no apropa llengües i cultures, sinó que les separa. No es tracta d’una frase políticament correcta, sens dubte. Però respon a una lògica irrefutable. Gràcies a la traducció ens apropem a l’Altre, ens endinsem en la seva cultura, ens encuriosim per la seva gent, per la seva història, pels seus costums. Però ho fem, justament, perquè ens sabem diferents. Dues persones que ja s’entenen no necessiten traducció. La traducció neix a partir de la percepció de la diferència. I, en aquest sentit, la reforça.

Nous allons, pour commencer, parler de temps anciens, c'est-à-dire de temps morts ou en train de mourir. En ces temps-là, comme disent les contes, régnait la diversité. Les pays étaient divers, les langues étaient diverses, les goûts étaient divers. Sur cette diversité, pourtant, flottait un air commun, comme un nuage tranquille, la mode qui se répandait à son rythme en cercles plus ou moins concentriques. Des idées circulaient, des figures se ressemblaient, un art se répandait en prenant son temps et venait pimenter l'art local d'un peu d'exotisme. On voudrait nous faire croire que cela existe encore, et pour nous le faire croire, on a inventé une expression, diversité culturelle.
